Day 103 - Killington

Big day. Out 9:00 to 4:00 with lunch at the condo; overnight temps in the teens slowly rose into the thirties this afternoon - sunny and a little windy; 30 runs; 42,926 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; firm AM conditions gave way to soft spring corn by the afternoon; very few people out;

Day 102 - Killington

Out 10:00 to 4:00 with lunch at the condo; 2" overnight - cold and windy today with clearing skies - temps in the twenties; 22 runs; 32,088 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; to give the snow a chance to dry out they groomed very late this morning - that and the new snow had things looking and skiing pretty well today; not many people out; despite the cold temps overnight nothing really froze solid - but things did continue to firm all day; got to do OL 3 more times; a little late to the hill this morning when Sunrise and the south side of Bear were closed till 9:30 for on-going grooming; looking up and down OL.

Day 101 - Killington

AM session before the rain. Out 8:00 to 9:30, no break; sunny and windy to start with temps around 45°, then the clouds rolled in and the rain started at 9:30, so I left; 8 runs; 10,650 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #1's; soft, soft, soft; OL was divine - groomed flat with oodles of corn - I did 7; +15 on skis this morning, just 4 more to do!

PM session after the rain. Out 2:30 to 4:00, no break; cloudy and windy with temps around 45°; 7 runs; 9,500 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #1's; still super soft; OL was still divine - did 5 more, but this time from the SPE4.

Day 100 - Killington

Out 10:30 to 1:15, no breaks; put the rain gear on, but it never rained; various levels of fogginess with temps in the forties and a little wind up high; 14 runs; 16,548 vertical; soft and wet; ran away and hid in the Canyon, so no real crowd; Downdraft was good again so I did 7; only rode 1 high speed lift all day and today's total vertical shows it.

Day 99 - Killington

Out 10 to 1 with no break; light rain developing by 11 - temps in the low forties - cloud layer dropping all day - down to the top of Skye when I left; 16 runs, 21,098 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #1's; soft snow everywhere - a little sticky, but not too bad; nobody else out; Downdraft and Ovation were very, very good; late start today - the Sunrise Triple didn't run, so I had to drive to Bear.

Day 98 - Killington

Out 9:00 to noon, no break; another bluebird day - sunny and warm, but there was a little wind; 15 runs; 21,500 vertical; skied the Head i.SG RD's, groomers; a few people on the hill, but generally just ski right on; Dip Dip was very good, i.e. groomed; Ovation wasn't bad either, despite the 200 ft. ice fall on the lower face; skiing the SG skis has been fun; passed 1.5 million vertical feet skied this season; Killington's website giving out misinformation yet again - fail!

Out 9:00 to 3:00 with lunch at the condo; sunny with temps in the lower thirties and no wind - another spectacular day; 24 runs, 33,498 vertical; skied the Head i.SG RD's and the Volkl Mantras; groomers - a little heavy snow on maybe the bottom ¼ of Bear by the end of the day; there were a few people out today; more than 100,000 vertical in the past 3 days; new high max speed for the season - see below; the Mantras really worked well in the heavy, soft snow; still lots of stuff closed - OL and Dip Dip for example; a little late to the hill this morning when Sunrise and the south side of Bear were closed till 9:30 for on-going grooming.

Radvanyis Day 3. Out 8:00 to 12:00 with a coffee break in the KBL; sunny with temps rising into the thirties - a spectacular day except for the relentless wind; 14 runs; 16,276 vertical; skied the Atomic D2 3.0 Race GS's; some good groomers, but unfortunately they were not as soft as I was hoping for because the wind scoured any soft, loose snow into the trees; HUGE crowd; Old Superstar was very good; today's picture is of Trevor hitting one of the rails in the Woodward Peace Park on Dreamaker.

Radvanyis Day 2. Out 8:00 to 12:00 with a coffee break in the KBL; a little disappointed that we didn't get more than the 3" that fell overnight - last night's forecast and radar looked oh so promising, but c'est la vie; very windy today with temps rising into the twenties; 12 runs; 14,544 vertical; skied the Line SuperNatural 108's; powder, packed powder; huge Saturday crowd; Escapade/Flume was pretty good.

Out with the Radvanyis. Out 9:00 to 2:00 o'clock or so with a KBL coffee break; 3-4" this morning before the lifts opened and another 3-4" during the day - still snowing; temps in ther upper twenties and thankfully not as much wind as they were forecasting; 17 runs; 22,300 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; powder and packed powder, although some of the steeper stuff got a little scrapped off by the time I quit; lots of people.

Another great day. Out 11:45 to 4:00 with lunch at the Peak Lodge; growing overcast with temps just above freezing and a stiff wind blowing in weather from the southwest; 19 runs; 28,750 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 17's; corn, corn, corn; nobody out today - only rode the chair or box with someone else a few times; Outer Limits and Dip Dip were marvelous; did 8 on OL, but only 4 on Dip Dip - I just ran out of time.

Great day on the hill. Out 9:30 to 2:00 with lunch at the Peak Lodge; mostly sunny skies with temps just above freezing and a little wind; 21 runs, 28,000 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 17's; firm groomers softening quickly in the sun; lots of people for a Wednesday; plenty of great choices today - Outer Limits, Double Dipper, Downdraft and Superstar were all groomed; Canyon Quad running mid-week and Dip Dip groomed - priceless; skier's left of Tower 4 on the lower pitch of Superstar was noteworthy - they did an excellent job grooming the side of the glacier there; Ovation still closed after last weekend's rain/freeze.

Skied with Tad and Manford. Out for a couple of hours this AM; Clouds and sun with temps in the twenties and a little wind - another dusting of snow overnight; 11 runs; 13,800 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; firm groomers; trying to catch up on doing skis - I'm currently at +5 - I've done 2 pair each of the last 4 days and am hoping to continue the streak indefinitely.

Officially the stickiest day ever. Out 1:45 to 4:15, no break; 2" of glue overnight; clearing skies today with temps in the forties and no wind; 9 runs; 13,000 vertical; skied the 2012 Volkl RaceTiger SL World Cups; soft sticky snow everywhere - I almost had to walk down Sun Dog; the only lift lines were when the chair stopped, which it seemed to do a lot today; Bear Claw-Anti Venom-Wildfire all day; the pictures are the Sunrise Condo Association's groomer working outside the condo this evening.

Out for a morning and an afternoon session; building overcast with temps around freezing and no wind; 15 runs; 19,600 vertical; started on the Rossignol Avenger 76 Ti's - I wanted to start on a putt putt ski this am given yesterday's incident with my right knee - everything was fine, so I changed to the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 17's for the afternoon; firming groomers; fair number of people this morning, but almost empty this afternoon; the last 3 on Stashway-BearClaw-Sunburst were very good - not sure if it was the snow or lack of people.

Surprise snow! Only able to make a few runs after I tweaked my knee; 5-7" overnight when we only expected some snow showers - decreasing wind and snow all morning with a peak or two of sunshine as I departed; 6 runs; 7,000 vertical; powder and baby soft groomers with a frosting of new snow; skied the Line Supernatural 108's; a pretty good crowd as you'd expect with new snow overnight.

Hard rain. Out 10:00 to 2:30 with a coffee break at the Ski Club; rain all day - 1.25" maybe more since it started last night at 8:00; 12 runs; 14,200 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; various forms of wet snow, slush, and water - the best snow today was inside both tunnels I skied; maybe 2 or 3 dozen other people out; hated these skis again today; obviously stuck to the Bubble and K-1.

Shutout yesterday and delayed opening today. Out 10:15 to 2:00 today with coffee breaks at Bear and the Ski Club; clear and cold with strong, gusty winds; 15 runs; 16,750 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; soft groomers and lots of wind blown snow; Rime was divine; the Sunrise Triple never ran yesterday, so I was denied access to what limited terrain that was open given the extreme cold (-22°).

MLK Weekend 2019, start of the 2019 Polar Vortex?. Out 8:00 to 2:30 with a coffee break at Snowshed and lunch at the condo; 12" overnight with 6" more during the day; warmer, 10°, and a lot less wind than forecast; 13 runs; 14,333 vertical; skied the Volkl Katanas; deep, light, dry pow - lots of bumps later in the day; big crowd right from opening bell; skied with Chris and Trev; 1st chair on SPE4; freshies or close on Bear Claw/Wildfire, Growler, The Stairs, and Interceptor - Upper Needles and Ovation were good, The Throne was not.

Out 11:30 to 3:30 with a coffee break at the ski club; light snow accumulating a couple of inches with temps around 20° and a little bit of wind; 17 runs; 19,250 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; good snowmaking and soft groomers; good crowd, but not really much of a lift line; Dip Dip under the guns was very good - once again those long, overhead, tower guns were producing nice dry snow that didn't fall in big piles rather it spread out enough that it didn't develop moguls let alone any piles reminiscent of those school buses on Supe; Downdraft too - just mogulier.

Out 10:00 to 4:00 with coffee at the Ski Club and lunch at the condo; below zero overnight temps never got above 10° despite brilliant sunshine most of the day - no wind; ; 20 runs; 26,850 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 19's; groomers; finally snowmaking on Dip Dip - ought to be good under the guns tomorrow; saw an impressive young park rat arc Chute switch at 40 mph, although he did turn back around... to launch off the berm and over the rope where Chute cuts back to the Bunnel.

Ski Bum fail. Out 9;15 to 4:00 with a loooong lunch break at the condo; cold with a high overcast and lots of wind; fairly heavy PM snow shower; 17 runs, 20,400 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 19's; soft groomers; no one out except in the Ski Bum line; unbeknownst to me they added a second run to the Ski Bum Race today as a makeup for one of the cancelled races - I kept looping around expecting the line to go down, but it never did, so I just gave up; Cascade was divine this afternoon.

Short day - fell asleep at lunch and didn't wake up till 3:00. Out 10 to 12, then came home for lunch; overcast with temps around 20° and a little bit of wind; 7 runs; 7,777 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; groomers; lots of people but zero line; first time on the Fischer's since I had them ground with a 0° base bevel - since I couldn't turn 'em I just railroaded Bearly 5 times in a row.

Very bad day on the hill. Out 9:00 to 9:30; high overcast with temps in the upper twenties and no wind; 2½ runs, 1,400 vertical; skied the Atomic D2 3.0 Race GS's; Switch looked to have good cover; got run off into the rocks and trees by a totally unaware, 8 year old park rat - bruised my elbow and butt, but destroyed my race skis and a pair of poles.

Out 1:15 to 3:15 with a coffee break at the ski club; clear, cold and windy; 2" last night; temps overnight were below 0° and only warmed into the single digits - the sun and the Bubble helped a little; 11 runs; 12,250 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; packed powder; nobody out, but those that were stuck mostly to the Gondi; Sat AM update: I think I got a little frostbite on the big toe on my right foot.

More snow. Out 9:00 to 4:20 with coffee at KBL and a long lunch at the condo; K is reporting 9", but I think only half that fell overnight with the rest falling yesterday during the day; light snow and fog all day with temps around twenty and lots of wind; 20 runs; 24,100 vertical; skied the Line SuperNatural 108's; powder, packed powder and new snow on groomers; people but never a line; with all the wind the flatter woods down low in the Basin were loaded with snow, think Squeeze Play; OL had lots of snow first thing, but the coral encrusted bumps underneath made it a little tricky; the bumps on Upper Needle's Eye caught a lot of snow too.

Epic snowmaking day on Outer Limits. Out 11:00 to 3:15 with a quick trip back to the condo for my pass and a coffee break at the ski club; cold with a growing overcast and breeze; single digit temps overnight only rose into the teens; 15 runs; 19,250 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; dry, fluffy snowmaking from the long armed, overhead, fixed, tower guns on OL - perfectly smooth and flat to start, a few small bumps by the end of the day - did 8; not much of a crowd but everyone who was here was on OL.

Day 42 - Killington

Out 9:30 to 2:30 with coffee at the ski club and a bite to eat at Bear; sunny and very windy with temps rising into the thirties; 21 runs; 23,600 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; groomers; big crowd, but with all the lifts running you could always find a lift with no line.

Day 41 - Killington

Out 9:30 to 4:00 with lunch at the Long Trail Pub down at Snowshed; 3" of snow overnight with on-and-off snow showers all day; light winds with temps around 30° and a slowly rising cloud layer; 25 runs; 28,300 vertical; skied the Line SuperNatural 108's; new snow on groomers, it doesn't get any better than that; lots of people out; Bear Cub (the old Falls Brook) was very nice first thing; gouged the shit out of my skis on Highline again; love these skis; you really have to look closely to tell the picture below is not of a snowboard track.

Day 40 - Killington

Ski Bum cancelled. Out 9:00 to 12:45 with a coffee break in the KSC Building; clear and cold with very little wind; temps started out at 10° and only rose into the teens despite all the sun; 17 runs; 18,300 vertical; skied the Atomic D2 3.0 Race GS's; 3f; large crowd for mid-week, but only K-1 had any real line; Cascade and Superstar Headwall closed?

Day 39 - Killington

Surprisingly good today. Out 1:30 to 4:00 after yet another delayed opening - apparently start times are now aspirational; 2" of snow last night, then ½" of sleet and freezing rain followed by 4 or 5 hours of steady rain; cloudy and windy today with temps falling through the thirties - snow flurries when I quit; 13 runs; 16,500 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; conditions were actually pretty good - soft, smooth and firming; absolutely empty today - other than when it was actually raining I'm not sure I ever recall this few people out; third rain or mainly rain event in a row.

Day 38 - Killington

I took a few days off with all the rain and ice over the weekend. Out 10:45 to 4:15 with a long, leisurely lunch at the condo; windy with a growing cloud layer and temps around 30°; 18 runs; 19,250 vertical ;skied the Volkl Mantras; thick granular, chunks, and tons of ice with quite a few rocks thrown in just for good measure; lots of people but no real lift line; the rather large, irregularly shaped, snow making bumps on Cascade were replete with big patches of ice - if you can't tell it got the better of me this afternoon.

Day 35 - Killington

Merry Christmas. Out 8:30 to 3:15 with a coffee break in the ski club bldg. and a luxuriously long lunch at the condo; bluebird skies with a little nip in the air - temps rising to nearly twenty with a little wind up high; 20 runs; 22,500 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; firm and flat - several seemingly useless snow making setups; plenty of people especially later.

Day 34 - Killington

Received my first Christmas present today when the Sunrise chair opened, ski-in/ski-out is finally here! Out 11:30 to 2:45 with a coffee break down at Snowshed; clouds building into a constant light snow with temps around 20°; 18 runs; 20,300 vertical; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; crunchy, frozen groomers with plenty of chunks and rocks and even a little snowmaking thrown in; plenty of people, but never much of a lift line; Skyeship Base opened today too.

Day 33 - Killington

Successfully waited out today's rainstorm. Out 2:30 to 4:00; rain with temps around 50° and less wind than I think was predicted - it rained hard all then day stopped for an hour around 3:00; rain soaked ice and various forms of wet and/or soft snow and running water; lots of dirt and rocks exposed today; 10 runs; 11,140 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; nobody else out; Sunrise lift scheduled to run tomorrow - I hope all the rain doesn't change that plan.

Day 32 - Killington

Bluebird. Out 9:10 to 3:00 with a KSC coffee break and lunch at the Peak Lodge; sunny with temps rising through the thirties and a building wind; 25 runs; 30,309 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; 3f mostly, however did do some low angle woods on Ramshead; lots of people out enjoying the weather; Timberline was something new today that was very good; Bear Claw-Anti-venom was a delight again this AM; these skis are fine - they carve well and easily pave any bumps or piles into submission, it's just they're heavy and wide which makes them feel a bit sluggish.

Ski Bum #2. Out 9:10 to 2:00 with a couple of breaks in the ski club building; clear, cold and windy to start, but temps did eventually rise well into the twenties; 16 runs; 18,520 vertical; skied the 2012 Volkl RaceTiger SL World Cups and the Atomic D2 3.0 Race GS's; 3f; got to the Canyon this afternoon for 4 runs on Cascade; did pretty well in today's race - only got beat by 1 girl.

Day 30 - Killington

Out 9:15 to 1:00 with coffee in the Ski Club Building; cold and windy with another thick dusting of snow overnight - 10° to 15° with winds gusting to 40 mph+; 14 runs; 16,500 vertical; skied the Volkl Mantras; crunchy groomers with pockets of wind blown snow; nobody here today; wimped out and did 13 of my 14 runs in The Bubble; Mantras skied well today - they held nicely on anything firm and smoothed out all the bumps.

Day 29 - Killington

Out 9:15 to 1:45 with a coffee break in the KSC building; mostly in the cloud with temps around freezing, light snow falling and a steadily increasing breeze - just enough snow overnight and this AM to turn everything bright white again; 20 runs; 24,388 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; good and bad on the hill today, the good: the soft rolling groomer that was Upper Bear Claw/Middle and Lower Wildfire - the bad: the rocks on Bittersweet again and the chunks on Skyelark; missed the Canyon today - lapped Snowdon in The Bubble to keep warm instead.

Out 9:00 to 3:00 with coffee and lunch breaks; temps right at freezing with an in and out K Cloud and a tiny bit of wind; 27 runs; 34,250 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 17's; groomers and other stuff; skied with Chris - I love skiing with somebody who can keep up and/or even lead; still love these skis; did Double Dipper, NorthStar, and Ovation sans the bottom pitch; Bear Cub and Sun Dog opened today, but still no Sunrise Chair.

Out 9:00 to 12:45 with a coffee break in the KSC building; 20° and mostly sunny with a little wind up high; 18 runs; 21,260 vertical; skied the 2012 Volkl RaceTiger SL World Cups and the Head iSpeed GS Cheater 19's; nice carvable groomers with some real crunchy granular on most of the steeps; started at Bear this AM; hopefully ski-in/ski-out by Wednesday; skied all over today - Bear, Needle's, Skye, Canyon, and Snowdon; rode the new Snowdon Six Express for the first time today - very comfortable, but not so fast?

Cameo for Chris and Aaron. Out 8:00 to 10:45 with a KBL coffee break; clear and cold with very little wind - +3°in the Vale this AM; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; 8 runs, 8,500 vertical; groomers; the Snowdon Six Express debuted today - I was going to take a ride, but skied by the huge line directly to the car instead; made the first three with Susan and Jay; made the last three with Chris and Aaron.

Almost a powder day. Out 9:15 to 2:45 with a long lunch in the ski club building; 4" overnight - cold and blustery all day; 25 runs, 20,000 vertical; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; powder and packed powder - but we slipped a course on Upper Double Dipper and ran gates; GS and SL - keep the upper body tall and forward, don't collapse the upper body especially at the bottom of the turn; made several free runs today to check out the mountain - did Escapade, Panic Eye, Bittersweet, Cascade; Doug T. characterized my skiing as elegant.

Race Camp race on Highline. Out 9:00 to 2:45 with a long lunch at the ski club building; cold and blustery with significant snow showers; 15 runs; 10,000 vertical; skied the Head i.Speed GS Cheater 19's and the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; firm and flat; the Heads worked significantly better than the Fischers on the steep, icy pitch on Highline.

Race Camp Day 1. Out 9:00 to 2:45 with lunch in KBL; temps started just above freezing but were dropping fast by the time I left; windy all day; a little mix of everything in the sky: rain, snow, fog, clouds, sun...; skied the Fischer RC4 GS Cheater 18's; 17 runs; 11,000 vertical; in John Pierce's group with Kathy, Bob, Ken, Tim, Andy, and Dennis - everyone except Dennis was in our group last year; worked balance, specifically fore/aft balance - edge release, pivot-slips; falling leaf; 360's; worked early edging - statue of liberty; worked turn shape - apex drill.

5 runs in a downpour. Out 12:15 to 1:15, no break; temps in the mid-to-upper thirties with rain and fog; skied the Blizzard Brahma #2's; 5 runs; 4,000 vertical; frozen, ice covered snow and chairs and cars, and everything; skied with David W.; he had a free lift ticket so I'm sure he just felt obligated to use it, but we had a good time any way.
